MISTIC and the Introduction of New Technologies

by Curt Kerns, M.S., R.P.Bio., C.F.S.

The Mid-Island Science, Technology & Innovation Council (MISTIC) has awarded WetlandsPacific Corp. their 2010 Environmental Technology Award. While, as a developer of new technologies, I wish the old adage “invent a better mousetrap and the world will beat a path to your door” had a basis in reality, our experiences are anything but that. We have found it very difficult to introduce new technology, even those that so demonstrably are an improvement on existing practices. Regulatory hurdles and societal resistance to change are the main impediments.

MISTIC plays a vital role in spotlighting new technology. A company can indeed develop a better technology, but without being able to introduce it to the market, it will come to naught. MISTIC’s highlighting new technologies is every bit as vital to the process of innovation as is the technology.

MISTIC please keep up the excellent work!
